This work was executed during an artist in residence program I participated in Kamiyama on the island of Shikoku Japan. Working along the banks of the Akuikawa River I painted calligraphic forms with water in response to a local stone that had a unique jade tone. Enthralled by the impermanent appearance of water as ink, I recorded these compositions with black and white photographs. Discovering unique rock surfaces along the riverside, my brush became intimately engaged with three-dimensional forms. Relying upon a painter’s sensibility for composition I carefully organized brushwork with the pre-existing condition of found surfaces. I’m an active participant in the cycles of nature from the minute I pick up the brush until the work disappears.
