Sunset House

Group Exhibition, Seto Inland Sea, Shodo Island, Japan 2010-13

This project activates a unique site in the Setouchi Inland Sea based on local people’s stories, the history of the area and the surrounding ecology. Utilizing local stone dust and burnt wood clapboards arcing forms were “drawn” into the interior and exterior walls of this historical structure. While recomposing the exterior walls over two hundred participants recorded their hopes, dreams and memories for the site and affixed them to the dirt walls of the building energizing the site with a social history of the place. The openness of the setting sun is suggested in the warm tones of the arc carved in wood onto the westward surface of the building.

Water Diary (for Kamiyama)
This work was executed during an artist in residence program I participated in Kamiyama on the island of Shikoku Japan.  Working along the banks of the Akuikawa River I painted calligraphic forms with water in response to a local stone that had a unique jade tone.  Enthralled by the impermanent appearance of water as ink, I recorded these compositions with black and white photographs.
